The first step in hosting a fabulous event is making sure your guests have the proper enticement to attend. How do you do that? With a gorgeous invitation suite! Josh and I searched endlessly for invitations and save the dates that represented our personalities and what we want the wedding theme to be. I want to share my experience for those of you trying to purchase
Give Yourself O
ne Million Reminders a Day
Prior to purchasing our invitation suite, Josh and I had zero inspiration for what we wanted our wedding theme to be. Not only was the pressure rising, but our timing was very late and a decision needed to be made. If you’re dealing with a tough decision on a short timeline, my advice is this: keep repeating “this is my event, and I’m going to find something amazing.” In my situation, I felt incredible pressure from family members to select and send out the invitations. I put pressure on myself to pick the perfect suite, and I felt incredible frustration at the sheer number of beautiful options.
Throughout the process, I kept reminding myself that other people probably don’t care about the design as much as I do, so I need to pick something I’m comfortable with.
Our friends and family weren’t able to help much in the stationery department. Typically, when planning a wedding, I’ve found that friends and family don’t provide strong opinions when I presented options. I had to also remind myself that I know my preferences best and that only I could make the choice of what I wanted. With so many amazing wedding themes, I got stressed because I wanted to incorporate all of them somehow. As this was an unrealistic dream, I started used a hierarchical system to narrow down my options.
- I browsed a million wedding invitation options. I narrowed down the themes to three directions.
- After finding the themes I liked the most, I browsed even more! I identified keywords that represented each theme. Invitation vendors allowed me to filter by keyword/theme, so I found additional options within each category.
- Next, I took a bit of time to figure out what was most important to me. Was it the coloring? Was it the font and styling? Figuring out what I wanted to control the most allowed me to cut options that I didn’t love.
Get Rid of the Unrealistic Vision
I’m not entirely sure why, but I fantasized that I could find the “perfect” suite that would include everything that I wanted. Unfortunately, that’s just not possible. For example, Josh and I both share a passion for American history and classic/traditional design. This love wasn’t something that I could incorporate into the invitation suite, but I was able to find postage that worked perfectly with the suite but didn’t detract from the vision.
My Best Advice
If there is one thing you take away from this post, it’s to have fun! Planning an event should be amazing, memorable journey. Lower the pressure on yourself and remember- it doesn’t have to be perfect! Also, don’t be afraid to check out Etsy, that’s where I found my template and customized to my specifications.
