Interior decorating and coordinating can be difficult. I struggle to blend patterns and perfectly match colors. What’s the secret for the most impeccably curated rooms of the world? I believe interior decorating boils down to a few concepts.
Start with coordinating the basics
For my new apartment, I wanted to make sure I had basic elements which flow. So, I made sure to use the common theme of neutral pieces throughout my home. Then, I moved on to the more eccentric pieces that I just HAD to have. Like my darker, non-traditional couch. Making sure you have a solid foundation is my first step to creating a beautiful space.
Figure out your unique style
I have done a ton of research on the living rooms of my favorite bloggers. From time to time, I found myself picking the exact same pieces of furniture and accessories. Then, I realized I was coveting a made up, glamorous space which wasn’t uniquely mine. I needed my own flair. So, I took the top 3-5 items and ideas that I liked and found a similar piece that fit my personal style.
Let others help
Seeing as how I’m definitely not an expert, I wanted to make sure that my home had a proper flow among all of the rooms. I will admit, I am terrible at sticking to just one theme or style of decorating. I was tempted constantly to shift styles the more I started shopping. For all of my scatterbrained friends, I understand the temptation. My cure was to let my family help me rein it in. I relied a LOT on my fiance to help make decisions on the selection process.
My love of home decor (and TJ Maxx/HomeGoods) will never go away. So, I won’t be finished decorating for quite some time. For now, this is a look at the beginnings of my apartment decorating skills. More to come when I make a little more progress. Stay fabulous!
